Terra Nova High School has a farm. Students from the small Beaverton school, which focuses on individual learning and environmental citizenship, work the farm. Teacher Paul Hudak leads the program. They grow fruits and vegetables and flowers behind the school where there once was a baseball diamond. It’s an organic farm run on a CSA (community supported agriculture) model. People buy memberships at the beginning of the season, and get a box each week of fresh, locally grown food.

Plenty of other schools in Oregon have planted gardens for the kids; some even provide fresh food for lunches. But Terra Nova’s is believed to be the first high school CSA in Oregon.

The Avett Brothers are a band from North Carolina. They’ve traveled around the country for the past decade. If you must classify them, they play something of a bluegrass-folk-rock hybrid. They are sincere, passionate and exceptionally good live. They also have a good history in Portland, from Pickathon to memorable shows at the Oregon Zoo, the Crystal Ballroom and, in July, Edgefield Manor.
